Hearing God’s Voice…I am sensing a theme here…

Hearing the Voice of God...
Hearing the Voice of God…

This subject seems to be a theme that God would have us pay attention to…In devotionals, blogs and…

The Wednesday services at my church have been on Hearing the Voice of God….teachings on how this is done. You see God speaks to each of us, all of the time. Whispering in the “still small voice” described in the scriptures. Most of us hear him, in one manner or another, however it gets lost in the din of distractions in some of our lives. Or we dismiss it as crazy thoughts,or think that it is our own conscious speaking.  And some simply no longer hear it at all.

Still…God continually speaks to His creations, His children.
Romans 10:17 says that, “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.”
What does that mean, though?
God speaks to us by His Word. As most Christians know, and now I am going to let those who may see themselves as non-believers know, the Word of God is the Bible, as well as Jesus, Himself. I would imagine, no…I know, it also means God’s literal voice.
How do I know, because His Sheep know His voice! John 10:3-4 “My sheep hear my voice and they follow Me.” And I am one of His sheep…and I have known His voice, as different from all others, for the last nine years. Probably more, as the first time I knowledgeably heard God’s voice it sounded familiar. Like a voice in a crowd that pulls at one’s heart, a comforting voice one has not heard clearly in many years.
Having awesome spiritual parents, our Pastors, I have learned that primarily God speaks to us with the bible. Each Sunday, and for the purposed Christian, mid-week services, we hear the Word of God from the pulpit. A very human person is infilled with the Holy Spirit and compelled, to preach, teach or a combination of the two, to a room full of thirsty and hungry sheep, with the Word. Translating between the Gospels, Old Testament and the Holy Spirit, Himself, what it is God is feeding His sheep.
The issue is, are we listening? What should one listen for?
When listening to a sermon or message from God, we sense God’s direction personally. Next Sunday look around you…there are those shaking their heads in agreement, maybe even giving an excited AMEN. Then there are those who may be looking at their feet or sitting stoically with arms crossed. Honestly, we all exhibited these behaviors in church, at one time or another. If we are listening for the voice of God, and agree to hear Him.
I recently read a blog of a fellow Helium writer. I am drawn to her as we have similar issues in our lives with our boys. Her last blog post was titled, Why Doesn’t God Talk to Me?, a question many ask themselves, others and to the heavens. After reading her process from the question to the answer I was comforted that God had used her husband to reveal His manner of speaking to them, at this time.
There was a time when I believed I heard God audibly because I was stubborn and He was forced to be verbally firm with me, that was for that period of time in my life. The belief at the time helped me to soften my resolve and listen more closely for His voice. And I did continually hear that still small voice saying “Be still and know that I am God!” Psalm 46:10a For one of His more stubborn sheep that was a frustrating passage! Yet God was faithful and repeated it over and over again, in His voice, by His Word and in many messages I was to hear from the pulpit to home group meetings, for months…until I softened! And soften I did, by His grace alone. On my own I would never have listened.   :/
Faith comes when God speaks to you personally…are you listening?
Psalm 29:4 says, “The voice of the LORD is powerful; The voice of the LORD is full of majesty”.
John 5 states “I do nothing of my own, but what I hear from the Father.”
Hearing the voice of God is a lifestyle…that begins in prayer, with meditation and study of His Word. In all of this we must ask to have the ability to hear the Word. Asking the Holy Spirit for enlightenment opens the Word of God to our ears, to hear…Asking the Holy Spirit to hear God’s voice in the sermons that He has men give will also bring His voice to you.

In God’s Word the word light speaks to Hope and the word voice speaks to Substance.

Proverbs 13:12a says,” Hope deferred makes the heart sick,”

If all we ever recieve from the Word of God, whether it be what we read or what is given us from the pulpit, is the Light or the Hope in the Word, we will not recieve the substance we are believing God for. What I mean is as humans we are able to receive a sense of hope from an inspirational passage or sermon, but we need Faith, a true belief of receiving to actually receive the substance contained within the very message that sparked hope. If we do not diligently seek the substance, Faith, we will become sick inside, discouraged.

Hebrews 11:1 tells us that Faith is the substance of things Hoped for.

We must live a life of prayer and time with the LORD to get the substance. Prayer is time with God, it’s an exchange between the child and the parent. Like my friend’s blog entry, it was an exchange. We are allowed to ask God about things that perplex us…it is no different to ask Him why He doesn’t talk to us than to ask Him how to hear Him. Both questions lead to the same answer from God…that still small voice…

1 Kings 19:11-13

 God’s Revelation to Elijah

Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.
So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

You see God is not in the winds, earthquakes or the fires of our lives…He is by our sides when those things occur. And after the storm quiets and we are standing in the aftermath of our crisis, we hear ….suddenly….” my child, what are you doing here?”

You may ask, why does He ask what I am doing in this situation???  The answer is in the scripture passages…He is not in the circumstance, and He doesn’t expect us to be! We are the children of the Most High, we are not supposed to be in the midst of chaos.

We are responsible for our own lifestyle changes and the results we get from these changes. We must seek and listen for His voice. The Substance is what God is saying to you, personally, when you spend time in His Word, in prayer and in His house.

Some tips to assist with learning to hear the Voice of God:

first…what was the last thing you believe God spoke to you to do? Whether it was yesterday or five years ago, go back to that instruction and do it. It will help you to get back to the Voice of God.

God speaks to us, individually, specifically through the sermons we hear from the pulpit.

*Write down what God instructs during these sermons.

*Lay hands on your ears and ask for spiritual hearing, before the sermon.

** remember we were made to hear God’s voice. John 10:3-4…If you have the desire to hear from God you are His sheep…Proverbs 13:12b, ” But when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.”

** Remember this…His sent ones hear Him.

Are you listening…

Blessings!

Welcome, I'm Andrea ... HOPEannFAITH ... I write and take pictures as a way of expression. These are gifts given by a loving and indulgent Father, to a headstrong and stubborn daughter, with much to say. A semi-retired social worker/secretary, I now call myself a writer. I've published one internet article and written many blog posts. However, publishing does not make one a writer, anymore than taking a box camera to the park makes one a photographer. What makes one who and what they are? Well God for one ... formed me before the foundations of this world (Psalm 139); and many, many years after putting away my passion for wordsmithing and picture taking He gave it back ... in droves. I am a culmination of my choices and experiences. It is here that my experiences color the world in print and color. It is my goal to reach just one soul a day with love ... encouragement ... understanding or just letting that soul know that they are not alone where they are today. This is about creating ~ all of it. Creating a HOLY and SACRED place where the ugly truth can be healed and the beauty of a moment or a tear can brighten a day for the experience. Why HOPEannFAITH? Hopeannfaith is my inner child, and she is maturing, as she should have done all along. She is learning all about how Faith fulfills Hope. She is learning how to live. HOPEannFAITH ~ the wonder twins all wrapped up in one, me. These are my Journey Journals ~ written and visual. I welcome your company. I welcome your friendships. My Journey is in the light ~ although I have and will share the shadowy corners and the dark ~ so you know that you are never alone there. If we hold hands in the dark, and we walk, side by side, through the shadow, we will reach the Light together. In relationship with one another and with the Light. Blessings.

  1. I do think that you are wrestling with the right issues, wanting to live informed by Scripture and committed to that truth while still open to having the Lord speak into your life if and when He chooses to do so. Don’t let the thoughts at thinkpoint.wordpress.com dissuade you from wanting to hear God’s voice . . . consistent with His Word. Grace, Summathetes (summathetes.wordpress.com)
